Nature reserve east of Trelleborg.
Dalköpinge ängar is a nature reserve, three hectares in size, created in 1975. The nature reserve consists of wetlands, supplied with water by the Gislövån stream that flows into the sea in the eastern parts of the reserve. In the nature reserve there are also remnants of a medieval chapel, which has protected status by law.
Dalköpinge ängar has likely never been used as farmland but rather for grazing by cattle and horses for hundreds of years. This is evident by the plants found in the reserve and the care plan for the area is adjusted to suit the needs of the nature. The meadows form a valuable biotope for the local flora. A wet meadow rich in species has been formed on the land adjacent to the marsh, in the old river furrow.
The proximity to the sea causes marsh plants to be mixed with marine species. Other types of vegetation in the area are heath and dry meadow. On the drier parts grow plantago media, pasqueflower, almond flower, tuber butter flower and thistle. On the wetter parts, one can find watercress, water speedwell, false fox-sedge and the early marsh-orchid. During a biological inventory in the early 1970s, the number of marsh plants was approximated to be nearly 250 species, many of which benefitted from the calcareous soil (such as orchids).
The rare butterfly species Capsula sparganii has a permenant presence in the reserve where its host plants (European bur-reed, bulrush and Iridaceae species) can be found in the western part of the meadows. A rich birdlife with estimated 160 different species, such as lapwing, redshank and common snipe can be found here.
