Welcome to Borgquist Hat museum, a museum in its original premises.
Borgquistska right in the heart of Trelleborg is unique. Nowhere else in Sweden is there a hat museum located in an old factory and so meticulously restored that it feel like the seamstress left her sewing machine only for a tea break. In 1867, Per Borgquist opened his hat and cap factory. Hats and caps of varying designs were manufactured in the small attic storey factory above a shop on Algatan up to 1978. By then manual production of hats had been dealt a killing blow by choice of the department stores and a fashion that had no place for them. Meanwhile, the shop became a realty firm and left the factory untouched.
Year in and year out the hats sat there collecting dust, the leather hung from the ceiling and the lists with all the orders and designs were hidden and forgotten. In 2007 the factory was given new life – this time as a museum. Several thousand visitors have already been guided around the premises where it feels as time stands still – and there are plenty more in the queue.
