Trelleborg is often called the City of Palm trees
In 1984 the first palm trees were planted in Trelleborg. They came from Alicante in Spain and there was great excitement when the Dutch long-distance truck arrived with a full-load of date palms and palmettos. But palms used to the Mediterranean climate surely couldn't thrive in Trelleborg, could they? It soon became apparent that the pleasant climate of southern Sweden suited the palm trees perfectly!
Today there are over 100 palm trees that squeeze into the palm house during the winter. The first Saturday in June is Pam Saturday when the palms are replanted along Strandgatan and other places in the city.
