Åmossarna is a pond system in Söderslätt that offer an interesting nature environment with several species of birds, reptiles, insects and plants!
Åmossarna is a ca 2 kilometer long pond system north of Västra Vemmerlöv. The 10-15 ponds lie like a string of pearls connected by the Ståstorp stream.
Åmossarna offers great biodiversity in the midst of the heavily cultivated agricultural landscape. The elongated water system acts as a resting place for several different bird species.
Several animals and plant species in the area are red listed according to ArtDatabanken because they are threatened, vulnerable or disadvantaged.
Findings have been made here from the Stone Age and Bronze Age piles are visible from the area.
Åmossarna is located along the road between Trelleborg and Uppåkra, which in the past was an important trading place. The area has probably been a rest area not only for birds, but also for people on the road.
The wetlands, with its large reeds have great biodiversity. Seabirds like to place their nests well protected in the reeds. Examples of nestingbirds in Åmossarna are greylag, brown ringtail, sheldrake, oystercatcher, ringed plover, common tern, redshank, great crested grebe and rednecked grebe.
Frogs also thrive in the bogs. Common frog, field frog, edible frog and common toad. Keep in mind that all frog and crawfish are protected in Sweden and should be treated with the utmost care!
